Let's hope here's a geologist in the making
Otherwise, in a few years, I'm going to feel pretty silly, leaving my 11-year old daughter to sit absorbed in the garden for two hours, carefully sieving soil into piles of particle size, while all the time I'm telling myself that this composes an effective education.

Your daughter sifts. My 10 1/2 year old son takes a shovel and digs a hole in the backyard. The hole is slowly getting deeper. He just looks at me and says, 'I'm going to dig, Mom.' And he does. At least your daughter could be a geologist. What is my son going to do?
archaeologist? mining engineer? novelist to write the next version of journey to the centre of the earth? there is sure to be a creative expression somewhere ... isn't there?
At least she's allowed to do something that sets her imagination at work in a world totally of her own for whatever time it takes her. I think that's pretty neat.
