The pleasure of saltless salt dough

No crying, throwing puffins, picking fights or kicking doors. That's a new one from Squirrel who is alive to the huge power stored in her legs. That's what I get for paying the bill on the ballet lessons. My daughter can kick in a door. Take warning.

While we divert Squirrel from kicking the original Victorian features of this house to something more useful like a cat, I try some fun time and make salt dough. Only we haven't got any salt, so it ends up as lots of coloured dough. And while Squirrel, Shark and Tiger clearly have four hours of fun making 2,560 small items of coloured dough creations, it is no fun clearing up. So I may leave you with some pictures, because right now I am under the kitchen table scraping the floor with a butter knife.

When my youngest was at preschool, I was the mummy in charge of making the salt dough. Every week. What fun we had making weird and wonderful coloured dough - often with whole pots full of glitter added.

Could they be sculpting new talent for the next feature film?

not only is it difficult to clean up, my dogs try to devour every scrap that falls toward them, but I must admit it's still lots of fun to play with dough.

Kicking in a door, really? Maybe I'll reevaluate those martial arts classes we were thinking about.

Reminds me of when my younger son was given some packs of Fimo for his birthday. He made lots and lots and lots of tiny intricate monsters. The following day he took some of them to school and sold them for 20p each! He used the money to buy some of the Lego he really wanted. Enterprising eh?

I remember those days and trying to get it out of the carpet. It was impossible, I remember, because the carpet was shag and the dough very sticky. This is eons ago when there were still dinosaurs wandering the earth.

And that is why the play-dough stays in the cupboard if I can help it...

Home made dough is the BEST! I had such fun making it and playing with it, when my sons were young. The stuff you buy from the shops is dreadful.

Those plastic cutters you can buy are just great and it's wonderful to play with, when it's warm. Mmmm...

Occasionally, I used to let the children play with it too, but not for too long because they used to make a mess. ;0)
(Spread a plastic tablecloth over your floor covering.)

We had to stop making it for a while because Number One daughter used to hide under bits of furniture and eat it until she was sick.
Glitter.Argh! There is glitter all over this house. Glitter and bloody cockroaches are the only things that are going to survive a nuclear holocaust. And that's a fact.
